John,

The Trump administration recently proposed a federal rule that would strip minimum wage and overtime pay protections from home care workers . If finalized, this new rule would further marginalize the already underpaid and mostly Black, Latina, Asian-American, and immigrant workforce.

A rule change stripping away pay protections from home care workers is yet another message that care work is not real work.

It’s an insult to the care workers who ensure our loved ones, who are aging or living with disabilities, receive the assistance they need to live with dignity and independence in their homes.

We’re launching a big push for NDWA supporters like you to send in public comments to the Department of Labor opposing this harmful federal rule change. Can you send in a public comment right now? [[link removed]]

The proposed rule change is an attack on the rights of domestic workers and hands power back to employers. The rollback would leave care workers even more vulnerable, devalued, and exploited at a time when we need them most.

In 2013, domestic workers and advocates organized a massive campaign for guaranteed minimum wage and overtime pay — and we won. Domestic workers have been excluded from some basic labor protections for decades. This victory was a major shift in domestic worker rights.

But now, the Department of Labor’s proposed changes to the “companionship rule” would take back this hard-fought victory from home care workers.

Care work is real work . It was true decades ago even when domestic workers were excluded from the Fair Labor Standards Act in the 1930s and when some workers were again excluded in the 1970s when the legislation was amended. It’s true now as the attempt to rip wage protections away from care workers is in full swing within the Trump administration.

We must come together now and speak directly to the Department of Labor: Don’t take away minimum wage and overtime protections for home care workers! Make your public comment now — you can find more tips for leaving a comment when you click here. [[link removed]]

This attack on worker rights isn’t just about home care, it’s about all domestic work. If the Department of Labor succeeds in stripping rights from care workers, it opens the door to attacks on the rest of us and all of the progress we’ve won in Congress and states across the country.

Thank you for taking action,

The NDWA Team

The majority of domestic workers sit at the center of some of our nation’s most decisive issues because of who they are and what they do: they are women – mostly women of color, immigrants, mothers, and low-wage workers. They are impacted by almost every policy affecting the future of our economy, democracy and country.

Domestic workers can lead us toward a new, inclusive vision for the future for all of us -- and your grassroots support is the fuel that can get us there.
