Buckle up, John — we’re climbing into a time machine.
The year is 2004, and believe it or not, a majority of Texas’s seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are held by Democrats. That’s right: just over 20 years ago, Texas’s House delegation was blue!
Then, everything began to change — and not by accident. Republicans in the Texas legislature and the U.S. House delegation began working together on a mid-decade redraw of the state’s congressional districts. They pushed through a new, manipulated map ahead of the 2004 elections — and the results were brutal.
The gerrymandered map helped the GOP swing Texas’s U.S. House delegation from a 17-15 disadvantage to a 21-11 advantage. And just like that, Republicans had a blueprint for redistricting to consolidate power nationwide that they are still following to this day.
In fact, the fight during the current special legislative session takes that approach to a new extreme. It’s a flagrant attempt by Donald Trump and Texas Republicans to further tilt the scales and help them hold control of the U.S. House during the 2026 midterm elections.
We have to stop these authoritarian power grabs — and that means funding the work we’re doing in Texas, Ohio, and other state-level battles to stop gerrymandering and support fair maps. Donate now to make sure we stop these attacks on democracy wherever they arise: [[link removed]]
President Trump sees the writing on the wall: The American people are very unhappy with what’s going on in our country. And he’s planning to do whatever it takes to hold onto power and make sure voters who disagree with his agenda can’t make their voices heard.
The 2026 midterms are our best opportunity to stop Trump’s anti-democracy agenda in its tracks.
But to make sure the will of the people prevails on Election Day, we must put in the work right now in places like Texas, where decisions are now being made that could shape election outcomes across the states as well as the balance of power in Congress.
With your support, we will keep fighting for fair representation in Texas and wherever gerrymandering poses a threat to fair maps. Donate now to help defend our democracy >> [[link removed]]
