Hi,

Right now, we are facing the voting rights fight of our lifetime. Texas Democrats are showing this country what it means to stand up for democracy, and I’m proud to stand with them.

A few nights ago, a group of courageous Texas Democrats fled their state and landed here in Chicago — risking their political careers to protest Greg Abbott’s extremist, gerrymandered maps and defend the voting rights of Black, Latino, and working-class Texans.

Donald Trump and Texas Republicans are launching a blatant power grab — trying to rig the next election by stripping away voting rights and silencing entire communities. If they succeed, they won’t stop at Texas.

There’s no line Republicans won't cross. Governor Abbott has even ordered state troopers to hunt down and arrest these brave lawmakers. But we’re not afraid of their threats. Illinois will continue to stand with these legislators — and we will do everything in our power to support and protect them.

This is personal to me.

Sixty years ago, my father, Henry, marched from Selma to Montgomery to demand the right to vote. He was a Navy veteran who decided he wanted to stand up and be counted — and I carry that fight with me every single day.

But here we are in 2025, and Donald Trump and his allies are doing everything they can to roll back that progress.

So I have a message for President Trump and Governor Abbott: We are watching you. In Illinois, we don’t sit on the sidelines. In Illinois, we don’t take kindly to threats. And in Illinois, we fight back. If Trump and Texas Republicans won’t play by the rules, we will look at every option available to stop their extreme power grab, and nothing will be off the table.

Now is the time for leaders to be bold, unflinching, and fearless. I will continue to be that leader — for Illinois, for our brothers and sisters in Texas, and for the future of our democracy.
