Dear John,
It’s a great day for women’s health in America! This week Planned Parenthood proved yet again that they care more about abortions than about women - and $60 million every year will go back to clinics that provide legitimate women’s healthcare!
The federal Title X funding program was set up 50 years ago to keep low-income women healthy. From the start, Congress was clear that Title X was not about abortion, and said that clinics that perform elective abortions would not be able to get taxpayer dollars from the Title X program.
But that wasn’t always followed, and a lot of clinics were getting Title X funding at the same time as they were performing and referring for abortions. It’s a conflict of interest!
And so last May, the Trump Administration proposed the Protect Life Rule to make sure that Congress’s plan was being followed and that vulnerable women and girls would get the help and care they need.
You can guess what happened next - Planned Parenthood sued to keep their funding stream going. But late last Friday, they lost their appeal, and the Protect Life rule went into effect on Monday!
Planned Parenthood had a few choices. They could restructure to comply with the rule (since they hadn’t followed the terms of Title X all along), or they could stop performing abortions. After all, they say that only 3% of what they do is abortion. If that number - which the Washington Post rated as “Three Pinocchios” - was true, then why not give it up to keep their federal funding?
But they showed their true colors by choosing abortion over women. They gave up $60 million in federal funding each year rather than restructure or stop targeting children. They really are America’s deadliest nonprofit.
