Sister District has just announced our support of Catelin Drey in a crucial special election for Iowa State Senate District 1 on August 26, marking our first endorsement ever in the Hawkeye State.
This seat is uniquely important: flipping Iowa Senate District 1 would immediately dismantle the Republican supermajority in the State Senate, ending the Governor’s power to push judicial and agency appointments forward without bipartisan support. That shift is not just symbolic, it is strategic. Breaking the Republican supermajority would force negotiation on state leadership and key policy decisions, and signal real checks on extremist power in Des Moines.
Why Iowa? Why Now?
Catelin Drey’s opponent is one of the most extreme MAGA state legislative candidates in the country.
- He has compared reproductive rights to the Holocaust, and voiced fringe conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and climate change.
- Since his nomination, he has been attempting to scrub evidence of his most extreme views – a clear indication that his campaign knows he won’t resonate with the voters of SD-1.
