Power in Texas

For decades, pastors have fought for the right to speak on political issues and actively endorse candidates in their capacity as religious leaders. In July, the Internal Revenue Service decided to allow religious leaders to endorse political candidates from the pulpit, effectively upending a provision in decades-old tax law barring such activity.

Now, before a judge has weighed in on whether to allow that policy change, some religious leaders are already calling on congregations to demand greater political involvement from their churches, according to our reporting in partnership with The Texas Tribune and Fort Worth Report.

ProPublica’s immigration reporting on MSNBC

ProPublica reporter Nicole Foy spoke with MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House” about her reporting with McKenzie Funk on immigration agents breaking car windows to arrest people.

Their reporting pieced together nearly 50 instances of these arrests. Many of the incidents are recorded as cellphone videos from people nearby, and some are even recorded by people within the car. The reporting shows broad trends that discrete videos can’t convey alone.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement says its officers “use only the level of force that is objectively reasonable.” Nicole and McKenzie’s story lets readers see these videos and make their own judgments about what’s reasonable.
