Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears was caught on tape downplaying massive federal job
cuts under Trump’s DOGE plan. She said losing a job “happens to everybody all
the time” and “isn’t a huge, huge thing.”

Federal workforce reductions have hit Virginia especially hard: Northern
Virginia lost over 11,000 federal jobs so far, and the state’s unemployment has
risen steadily for six months—making it the only state with a statistically
significant June spike.

Union leaders and fired federal workers blasted Sears for her comments and her
alignment with Trump’s agenda: “she doesn’t understand what working families
face … she can’t be trusted to fight for Virginia.

Virginia fell in CNBC’s “Top States for Business” ranking—down from #1 to
#4—largely due to federal cutbacks and economic vulnerability under GOP-backed
policies.

If Sears wins, she cements MAGA-driven federal cuts and job losses as
acceptable—not just for Democrats, but for everyday Virginians whose livelihoods
and care are on the line.
