How COVID-19 Is Affecting Coverage

A Commonwealth Fund/SSRS survey provides a snapshot of how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected health insurance coverage. It finds that two of five U.S. adults who reported a job disruption said they or their partner or spouse, or both, had job-based health coverage through the affected job; and that Hispanics and people with lower incomes are more likely than whites and people with higher incomes to have been laid off or furloughed.

Outpatient Care Rebounds But Remains Below Prepandemic Levels

While outpatient visits across the nation rebounded in June, they are still as much as 20 percent below prepandemic levels in some parts of the country, according to an updated Fund report. The real-time snapshot from Harvard University and health care technology company Phreesia also finds that even as visits continue to rebound, telemedicine accounts for a relatively small portion of the rebound.

On To the Point, the Commonwealth Fund’s Eric Schneider, M.D., and Tanya Shah warn that the cumulative gap in visits may continue to put the health of Americans at risk.

Hospitals’ Financial Troubles During the Pandemic

How has the cancellation or postponement of care, as well as increased costs, affected hospitals’ financial health during the COVID-19 crisis? In a new issue brief, researchers looked at the financial performance of four of the largest publicly traded for-profit hospitals, finding declines in service volume and operating profits, as well as a 52 percent drop in market value.

Letters of Intent on Health Equity in Medicaid Requested

The Commonwealth Fund’s program on Medicaid seeks Letters of Intent (LOIs) addressing health equity for Medicaid beneficiaries, including social determinants of health, and the impact of COVID-19 on beneficiaries, providers, and care delivery innovations.
