John,
On the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, here’s a look at how far we’ve come — and what’s at risk right now.
1965
President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law, expanding voting rights and ensuring states followed the 15th Amendment’s guarantee that the right to vote would not be denied because of race.
Over the next four decades , five presidents — Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush — signed legislation to reauthorize and expand the Voting Rights Act. Despite ongoing opposition, the Voting Rights Act helped close racial voting gaps and increased Black and Latino representation in government.

2013
The Supreme Court gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in its 2013 Shelby County v. Holder decision, creating room for the voter suppression we see today.
⬇️
2025
More than 400 bills that make it harder to vote have been introduced in statehouses across the country in 2025. States have passed 30 of these bills into law. And nearly 59 million eligible voters live in states that have passed laws to make voting harder this year.
⬇️
Last week
The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act was reintroduced in the U.S. Senate. This critical bill would strengthen and protect voting rights for millions of Black and Brown voters across the country.
⬇️
Here’s how:
📍 Require federal review of any changes to voting rules in states with a history of racial discrimination against voters.
📍 Strengthen protections against gerrymandering, a practice that weakens Black and Brown voting power.
📍 Make it harder to decrease access to voting materials, early voting, and polling locations in different languages.
📍 Allow citizens to file lawsuits if they experience discrimination at the polls.
John, even with these ongoing attacks on our voting rights, there is still hope. The power belongs with the people — and that starts with us. Make a plan to vote and help your friends and family do the same. Visit WhenWeAllVote.org to get started today. [[link removed]]
