John —
We’ve seen firsthand here in North Carolina what happens when a political party abuses its power to undermine some voters’ rights, make some votes count more than others, and secure their own power.
On the 60th anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act into law, we have to recommit to the fight for a free and fair democratic process, and I’d like you to join me. Will you add your name to demand fair legislative maps in North Carolina?
The Voting Rights Act made a real difference in ensuring that all of us could vote and know that our votes counted as much as any other. But in 2013, the Supreme Court struck down an essential provision of the VRA, undermining its power and allowing politicians to abuse our voting rules and redistricting processes for their party’s gain.
Here in North Carolina, Republicans in control of the legislature have repeatedly drawn legislative maps so blatantly partisan that many have been graded “F” for partisan fairness by the Princeton Gerrymandering Project. Our current congressional and state Senate maps received that grade and are some of the least representative maps in the nation.
North Carolina Republicans have used the redistricting process to give their own party a ridiculously unfair advantage in elections. It’s an outrage to the principle of democracy itself.
Meanwhile, NC GOP legislators have also passed restrictive anti-voting laws that are making it harder for North Carolinians to participate in our political process. And after the 2024 elections, they actually launched a lawsuit to throw out tens of thousands of votes and attempt to change the results of a judicial race that they lost. Thankfully, the Republicans did not succeed — but they’ve been empowered to continue trying absurd tactics to overturn elections when they don’t like the result.
John, let’s speak out together and demand better for our democracy. Sign on to call for fair maps in North Carolina >>>
I appreciate it,
Josh Stein
