John — there's a moment that changed everything for me, and it happened in a small rural church outside of Lake Mills in December 2016.

I was sitting at my Grandma Fern's funeral, surrounded by the farming community she'd served as a beloved teacher for decades. She'd been my North Star — the woman who taught me that taking care of family meant taking care of the land, and that public service was about lifting up your neighbors.

One of the last things Grandma Fern told me was that I needed to move back to Iowa and take care of our family farm. At the time, I wasn't sure what that meant. But sitting in that church where she'd been an active member for most of her life, I felt it — a strong pull to come home.

About a month later, I had my moment of clarity.

I remembered reading that life isn't about the pursuit of happiness — it's about the pursuit of meaningfulness. And I realized the most meaningful thing I could do was honor Grandma Fern's legacy by moving back home to Iowa and fighting for what I believe in.

That's how I got into politics, John. Not because of some grand political ambition, but because a woman who spent her life teaching kids and caring for her community told me it was time to step up. In service to her memory, I will always fight to protect farming as a way of life in this state and defend the public education she cherished.

Grandma Fern understood something that corporate politicians have forgotten: real strength comes from taking care of each other. She knew that a thriving Iowa meant strong farms, excellent schools, and communities where working families could build a good life.

So today, I want to ask you to do something really important: Please reach out to someone you care about, and tell them what they mean to you. You never know when it’ll be too late.

Grandma Fern represented the best of the Iowa I'm fighting for — not the one that works for special interests and corporate PACs, but one where a teacher and a farmer can make a difference in the lives of her entire community.

I'm in this fight because of her,

J.D. Scholten
