Dear John,
You may have seen reports claiming Twin Metals now holds leases to mine near the Boundary Waters. That’s not the case - Twin Metals has not been granted those leases.
Here’s what did happen:
The Department of the Interior issued a memo that does not, in fact, reissue Twin Metal’s expired leases, but signals an attempt by the Administration to set the legal stage to do exactly that.
The Department reinstated a flawed legal decision from 2017 that argued that Twin Metals Minnesota had the right to a third renewal of their expired mineral leases in the headwaters of the Boundary Waters, and that the Bureau of Land Management did not have the discretion to deny that renewal application , which they did in 2016.

This is another deeply concerning step that sets the stage for reissuing mineral leases in the headwaters of the Boundary Waters; however, no leases have been granted at this time.
It’s a deliberate move toward fast-tracking toxic sulfide-ore copper mining in the headwaters of the Boundary Waters—handing over public lands to a foreign mining giant.
This fight is far from over. As a valued member of the Save the Boundary Waters community, you deserve accurate, timely information, despite how complex it may be, and we’ll continue to keep you informed every step of the way.
