The suspect was identified as Ever Marquez, 31, of Pacoima, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. On Aug. 4, the victim was walking with her dog and was on the roadway when they were struck by a driver near Osborne and Haddon Streets around 8:10 p.m. The driver did not stop to check on the victim and sped away. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. She was only identified as a woman in her mid-70s. Her dog was severely hurt and later died from its injuries. Investigators identified Marquez as the primary suspect and on Aug. 5, he was arrested for a felony hit-and-run causing death. He is being held on $30,000 bail. “Motorists are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves,” LAPD officials said. “Pedestrians are also reminded to use crosswalks when crossing streets and to do so in a safe manner as to not pose a hazard to vehicles.” KTLA 5 Police investigating deadly shooting in Pacoima Police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened in Pacoima on Wednesday. CBS 2 Trial date set for woman charged with selling Matthew Perry fatal ketamine dose A woman charged with selling Matthew Perry the dose of ketamine that killed him is headed for a September trial. Jasveen Sangha’s trial — the only one forthcoming in the death of the “Friends” star after four other defendants reached plea agreements with prosecutors — is now set to begin Sept. 23 after an order Tuesday from a federal judge in Los Angeles. The 42-year-old Sangha, who prosecutors say was known to her customers as “The Ketamine Queen,” is charged with five counts of ketamine distribution, including one count of distribution resulting in death. She has pleaded not guilty and has been held in federal custody since her arrest last year. Her trial had been scheduled to start Aug. 19, but the judge postponed it for the fourth time since her April 2024 indictment after both sides agreed it should be moved. Sangha’s lawyers said they needed the time to go through the huge amount of evidence they have received from the prosecution and to finish their own investigation. Sangha was one of the two biggest targets in the investigation of Perry’s death, along with Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who pleaded guilty to ketamine distribution last month. Perry’s personal assistant, his friend and another doctor also entered guilty pleas and are cooperating with prosecutors. All are awaiting sentencing. NBC 4 Violent mob livestreams attack on South Los Angeles taco truck and employees Video shows a mob of suspects using baseball bats to assault workers and vandalize a taco truck in South Los Angeles. The violent attack was apparently livestreamed on social media. Surprisingly, the mob of attackers didn't take any money, according to the owner. The attack happened Sunday at midnight at the Tacos Los Poblanos truck parked at Avalon Boulevard and Slauson Avenue. According to the owner, a mob of men showed up at closing time, yelling expletives in English and Spanish. Then, they started vandalizing the taco truck. The owner didn't want Eyewitness News to show his face or use his name out of concern for his safety. "When one of my employees called me, 'Please, please call the police because about 25 people hit us with baseball bats and metal.' It was scary," the owner said. The owner's daughter also didn't want to go on camera. She said what's disturbing is that the group was livestreaming the attack. ABC 7 Man to Plead Guilty to South LA Armed Robbery Spree A South Bay man is expected to plead guilty Wednesday to his role in a crew that committed armed robberies of a liquor store, gas station and convenience store — a crime spree that prosecutors say ended in the death of an innocent driver in a fatal multi-vehicle accident while the defendants fled from police. Salagi Iakopo, 32, of Carson has agreed to enter his plea in Los Angeles federal court to one count of interference of commerce by robbery, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The defendants — Iakopo, Kaelenn Maea, 28, of Long Beach and Mathew Salanoa, 25, of Placentia — committed three armed robberies in September 2023 in Downey, Compton, and South El Monte, according to court documents. In each of the robberies, one of the robbers used a short-style rifle to control the cashier and customers while another robber took full cash registers or drawers before all the robbers fled in a stolen Range Rover, officials said. MyNewsLA Studio City residents confront alleged mail thief; suspect flees after violent struggle A suspected mail thief was confronted by Studio City residents late Tuesday night, leading to a physical altercation, visible injuries, and a damaged vehicle. The suspect fled the scene on an electric scooter and remains at large. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a call came in around 11 p.m. Tuesday from an apartment complex at 4249 Longridge Avenue, near the intersection of Fulton Ave. and Valleyheart Drive, reporting a possible burglary in progress. A second call moments later indicated that a resident was trying to apprehend a male suspect believed to be responsible for repeated mail thefts in the area. However, police say a struggle broke out during the confrontation, and the suspect fled the scene. One resident sustained visible injuries and was treated by Los Angeles Fire paramedics on site. The LAPD Van Nuys Division confirms that while the suspect has not been located, they are actively investigating. FOX 11 L.A. County residents illegally exported ‘sensitive’ high-power AI microchips to China, feds allege Two Los Angeles County residents face federal charges after they were arrested on suspicion of illegally exporting tens of millions of dollars’ worth of artificial intelligence microchips to China, authorities said. Chuan Geng, 28, of Pasadena, and Shiwei Yang, 28, of El Monte, were taken into custody on Saturday for their alleged involvement in the illegal overseas export of processing units used in modern computing and artificial intelligence applications, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of California. Federal prosecutors said both were Chinese nationals, though Geng is a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. Yang, however, was in the country illegally as she had overstayed her visa, according to authorities. In a criminal complaint, U.S. Justice Department officials alleged the pair had “knowingly and willingly” undercut federal export regulations to conceal illegal shipments to China for nearly three years. Los Angeles Times Local Government News Firefighters rescue woman trapped in small chimney in San Fernando Firefighters rescued a woman trapped in a small chimney in San Fernando on Tuesday. AIR7 flew over the scene where several Los Angeles firefighters were working to free the woman from the chimney. It happened at a municipal building at the City of San Fernando Recreation Center on N. Park Avenue. Officials say the small building is used for storage. According to LAFD, an approximately 30-year-old woman was discovered about three feet deep within the chimney/exhaust flue. Members of the L.A. Fire Department's Urban Search and Rescue Team had to use a ladder to reach her and then used a harness to lift her up and out of the chimney. Video shows the crew lifting the woman out of the chimney. Over a dozen firefighters stood on the roof as they worked to free the woman. Eventually, she was lifted out and lowered to the roof, where she was strapped to a gurney and lowered to the ground using the truck ladder as a crane. ABC 7 Firefighters Extinguish Brush Fire in Elysian Park Using water drops from a department helicopter as well as a coordinated ground attack, Los Angeles Fire Department personnel extinguished a brush fire Wednesday in Elysian Park. Fire crews responded at approximately 1:40 a.m. Wednesday to the Buena Vista Meadow Picnic Area at 526 Buena Vista Drive where they found the 50′ x 100′ area where the flames had burned earlier, said LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey. No evacuations were needed, no structures were burned and no injuries were reported, Humphrey said. LAFD crews will remain on scene to cool hot spots and the cause of the fire is under investigation. MyNewsLA L.A. fires led to more than 400 additional deaths, study finds The fires that ravaged Los Angeles at the beginning of this year took 31 lives by the official count, but new research estimates there were hundreds more deaths that are attributable to the disaster. In the study, published in the medical journal JAMA on Wednesday, researchers analyzed data on the number of deaths in Los Angeles County from Jan. 5 to Feb. 1, 2025 — the period when the Palisades and Eaton fires tore though the city — and estimated that 440 more deaths could be attributed to the fires, compared to the expected number based on data from previous years. These additional deaths likely reflect a combination of factors, including increased exposure to poor air quality, which may exacerbate heart or lung conditions, the authors say. They also point to the impact of delays or interruptions in people's access to necessary health care during that period. CBS 2 California fires are burning and incoming heat wave could make things worse Authorities in California are bracing themselves for a prolonged heat wave this week that could amplify the risks of a wildfire and intensify fires already burning in the southern and central portions of the state. The warming trend is forecast to bake almost all of inland California over the next week, dialing up the heat on what’s already been a fiery summer in the state’s southern half, and raising the risks up north after a relatively quiet start to the season. “This week will definitely bring those elevated fire weather conditions,” said Adam Roser, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in San Diego. In Southern California, “the vegetation is still very dry. ... [and] these are definitely some of the hotter temperatures we’ve seen so far this summer.” Southern California’s hottest days are expected to be Wednesday through Friday, when much of the interior is under heat advisories as temperatures are forecast to range from the upper 90s to the triple digits across many valleys and deserts. Palm Springs could reach up to 118 on Thursday while downtown Los Angeles could hit 90.
