Within 24 hours, I took him to court.
As California’s Attorney General, I unapologetically fight against every one of Trump’s violations of our Constitution — but this one is personal for me:
My parents left behind their lives as social justice workers in the Philippines and brought my family to California when I was just two months old. At that time, the Philippines was on the brink of martial law with a dictator rising to power, and my parents wanted to raise me and my siblings in a country with rule of law, civil rights, and democracy.
Decades later, I’m fighting to protect the rights and values they came here for — from a federal administration determined to dismantle them.
When Trump attacks our basic constitutional rights, whether it’s birthright citizenship or the right to vote or freedom of speech, it’s not a legal theory or a headline — it’s about whether people get to fully participate in our country. Whether all kids born here have the same protections and opportunities as anyone else. Whether America and California live up to the promise and dream that so many come here to pursue.
That’s why I do this work. I’ve filed 37 lawsuits in the past 28 weeks to stop Trump’s illegal actions and defend the rights of every Californian.
I will use the full power of my office and every bit of platform I have to protect those most vulnerable and safeguard the California Dream for every person who seeks it.
