John, Several Democratic legislators have left the state of Texas. Why? To prevent the legislature from having the quorum it needs to vote on their egregious, gerrymandered map. Republicans drew up this map in a back-room deal to deliver Trump his demand of five additional congressional seats. This is an emergency moment for our democracy — and this is an emergency maneuver to stop a partisan power grab. So far, Texas Republicans are full steam ahead — even suggesting these Democrats should be arrested or thrown out of office for leaving the state. Kowtowing to Trump’s orders to steal five votes, then threatening to arrest lawmakers who refuse to play along — it’s something out of an authoritarian playbook. That’s why what we do next matters tremendously and will have ripple effects far beyond Texas.
We know that this radically gerrymandered map in Texas is only the beginning of Trump’s siege on our democracy. They’re already considering pulling the same move in Missouri, Florida, New Hampshire, and beyond. What all of this comes down to is that Republicans know that their policies are deeply unpopular. Trump knows his approval rankings are tanking. Republicans from the Texas state legislature to the White House know that they’re in for a shellacking in the 2026 midterms. So instead of playing by the rules, they’re going to change them to give themselves an unearned advantage. And all of it takes power away from voters. They’re packing voters of color into a couple of districts to silence the will of the people. Thank you for your commitment to the fight against partisan gerrymandering, especially in this critical moment. — Team NDRC
