Hello Friend, 

Though we wrapped up our legislative work in June, we’re just seeing our work from this year’s session become officially enacted, with the bulk of our budget and laws going into effect on July 1 and a few more at the start of this month.

MPR had good summaries for both the July [ [link removed] ] and August [ [link removed] ] laws, but if you’re looking for in-depth descriptions of what was passed, you can find them here:

There are a lot of good laws in there, all of which were the product of bipartisan compromise due to the tie in the House, but one in particular I’d like to highlight is the Minnesota Consumer Data Privacy Act.

This new law grants Minnesotans the right to prevent their data from being sold or used to target advertising at them. In the case of sensitive personal data, including location data, companies would have to secure your permission in advance before using it in this manner.

If you submit a request to a company regarding your personal data, the company must respond within 45 days. If they fail to meet this deadline, you can then file a complaint with the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office.
