Grassroots media justice organizations
[link removed] Friend,
For more than a decade, MediaJustice has been at the forefront of racial, gender, and economic justice and how they intersect in our access to and freedom in a digital age. As a national movement, we have sought to defund and dismantle discriminatory policies and systems. Most importantly, we have connected and amplified over 100 organizations across the country through our MediaJustice Network, each of whom have raised up different facets of justice in the digital sphere.
We know you want to support organizations making a tangible difference. By funding grassroots organizations nationwide, the MJ Network Action Fund empowers the continuous work that makes alternatives such as defunding the police or decarceration possible by holding systems, corporations, and our communities accountable. “Media justice” is a critical crossroads of justice movements, and our Network members are essential to local, regional, and national efforts. Since March, we have disbursed nearly $60,000 through the MediaJustice Action Fund to Network members who are at the front lines of the headlines you have likely seen over the last few months. The Fund has supported members in keeping the (virtual) lights on and the fires burning, including key recent victories.
* With 25+ Network members ([link removed]) , we’re continuing to demand Congress #ProtectBlackDissent by ensuring Black activists fighting for a world without police violence are not subject to government surveillance. Take action with us! ([link removed])
* With MPower Change and other members, we’re pressuring Amazon ([link removed]) to cut their ties with police and ICE, in light of their recent moratorium on police use of its facial recognition technology
* With Witness and other members, we hosted a digital self-defense training to explore strategies to document law enforcement and how to keep your phone and communications safe as our people continue to take to the streets.
* With UCC Media Justice and other members, provisions getting us closer to prison phone justice and getting our communities connected via Lifeline have been included in Congress’ most recent proposed coronavirus stimulus package, the Heroes Act. ([link removed])
* With Movement Alliance Project and other members, we launched “Mapping Pretrial Injustice ([link removed]) ”, a #NoDigitalPrisons project, as a resource for organizers working to get our people out of cages.
MediaJustice’s roots grew from grassroots social justice organizing in Oakland. We knew even then that inequities in our communities were quickly translating into criminalization, surveillance, and disadvantage in the digital sphere--ten years later, our doorbells, internet and cell phone providers, and prison systems are systematically using high-tech tools to discriminate against BIPOC, low-income, and currently or previously incarcerated people, amongst others.
We’re only $2,000 away from our goal to fund MJ Network members’ needs through the year. Will you stand for media justice and donate today? ([link removed])
In Solidarity,
Team MediaJustice
