Hi John, it's Hannah Pingree, candidate for Governor here in Maine.

It is a big lobster weekend in Maine with both the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland wrapping up and great events around the state. I stopped by the Festival and then visited the Lincoln County Democrats’ Family Fund Day Lobster Bake. The Lobster Bake represents a chance to celebrate one of Maine’s most important industries and the importance of electing strong leaders.

Along with seeing friends, family, and fellow Democrats, we had important discussions about Maine’s future. And of course, we enjoyed some delicious Maine lobster!

John, lobster isn’t just an emblem of Maine’s culture. It’s a vital component of our coastal economy and integral to so many families and communities I know and love - including my hometown. That’s why Maine’s next governor must work to ensure the sustainability of our working waterfronts for generations to come, and it’s why I’m running to be that leader. Climate change poses a major threat to Maine's lobster industry and our coast. The warming ocean, rising seas, and increasingly devastating storm events have already impacted Maine’s fisheries and coastal communities.

That’s why I worked so hard, on behalf of Governor Mills, to help working waterfronts recover from the devastating January 2024 storms, and why I traveled the state to deliver solutions that will better prepare our communities for the storms of the future.

While our federal government under Donald Trump chooses to walk away from investing in climate readiness and has even proposed to shut down FEMA, we don’t have the luxury to give up on this urgent work.

I was chosen to lead the Office of Policy Innovation and the Future by Governor Janet Mills because I understand that, despite our disagreements, we all want common-sense solutions that invest in our future and protect our essential industries, our economy and our people. That’s what I promise to fight for as Maine’s next governor.
