Team,
The Trump administration is trying to ban abortion care for veterans and their families—even in cases of rape, incest, or health emergencies. This dangerous policy would block care for millions who access health care through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and would only permit a narrow exception to save the life of a pregnant veteran. These kinds of exceptions to save a person's life often don't work in reality.
This proposed rule would be one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country, applying to millions of veterans and their families, even in states where abortion is protected.
If finalized, this policy would restrict access to abortion care and counseling for the people who served our country, many of whom are already navigating trauma, PTSD, and high rates of sexual violence.
The VA is accepting public comments on this proposed change through September 3, 2025. This is our chance to speak out and stop it before it becomes law. Tell the VA: Veterans deserve full access to reproductive health care.
More than two million women veterans live in the U.S. today, and there are also thousands of transgender men as well as non-binary veterans who might need abortion care. Additionally, over 700,000 family members of veterans get their care from the VA. They all deserve access to the full range of reproductive health care, including abortion.
This rule is the Trump administration's first regulatory move to proactively take away abortion rights from people nationwide, and it's a warning sign of what's to come.
Thank you for taking action,
Center for Reproductive Rights
