While Texans were reeling from catastrophic flooding, Governor Greg Abbott called a special legislative session to "deliver disaster relief." But in reality, he had something else in mind. At the urging of Donald Trump, Abbott and Republican leaders used this moment of crisis to introduce a rushed redistricting scheme that could hand the GOP five additional congressional seats before the 2026 election.

But Texas Democrats fought back. Earlier this week, they walked out of the legislature, breaking quorum and bringing the session to a halt. And now, Governor Abbott is threatening to expel them for standing up for their constituents and defending democracy.

Republicans know they’re losing ground with everyday Americans. So instead of earning support, they’re turning to dirty tactics like redrawing the electoral map to lock in power.
