In case you missed it, Republicans are trying to gerrymander the state of
Texas by redrawing Congressional maps in a racially biased way that gives
them five new GOP-leaning districts. This is a massive power-grab backed
by Donald Trump.
The Texas House of Representatives requires 100 members to conduct
business, so Democratic members courageously broke quorum and left the
state in order to block a vote on this bill.
Now, Republican Governor Greg Abbott and his far-right administration are
threatening to expel, detain, or even ARREST these courageous lawmakers.

announced that the continued refusal to perform legislative duties by
Texas House Democrats who broke quorum constitutes abandonment of office
and that he will pursue a court ruling ensuring that their seats are
declared vacant. Speaker of the Texas House Dustin Burrows has given
members until Friday, August 8, to return to Texas and present themselves
before the House. Any lawmaker who has not been arrested and returned or
fails to appear by the Speaker’s deadline will be subject to aggressive
legal action by Attorney General Paxton.
Meanwhile, Trump is suggesting the FBI may need to get involved and
insists the GOP is “entitled” to these House seats.

This is NOT normal or okay,
John. What Republicans are doing isn’t just an
attack on voting rights and fair representation in Texas: it’s a threat to
our democracy across the country.
None of this would be possible if courts didn’t water down voting rights
laws over the years. This is a perfect example of why our courts are
critical, and why we need your help to rebalance them after Trump and the
GOP stacked them with far-right judges.
