Five years ago, the Supreme Court affirmed what we know to be true: love is love.

The historic ruling that finally accomplished marriage equality nationwide was long-coming, but it was only a step in our generational struggle to right many of the wrongs happening across this country.

Here's what I said five years ago, which is still true to this day:

Have no doubt, the road to ending discrimination will not be easy. It never has been before and it won't be now.

But if we work together, holding fast in the vision of equality and equal opportunity embedded in our Constitution and in every fiber of our beings, we will succeed.

We're still walking that road today. Every day.

The Supreme Court just decided that our civil rights laws do, in fact, bar discrimination in the workplace.

Five years ago, we decided as a nation that everyone should be allowed to marry the person they love. Now, it is our nation's policy that you can't be fired for who you love.

Now, we must affirm that these rights extend to housing, health care, education, shopping, travel, and more. We must affirm the right of loving people to adopt children, no matter the shape of their family. And we must speak as clearly as we can to denounce those who foment hatred and violence.
