** We just earned a huge victory for children and trafficking survivors in California!
------------------------------------------------------------
For the past two years, Exodus Cry has been advocating for laws that will make it a felony to purchase a child for sex in California—last year through SB 1414 and this year through AB 379.
While SB 1414 was a big step forward, a few legislators removed protection for 16 and 17-year-olds.
AB 379 fixed those loopholes, but we knew there would be opposition to it just like there was toward SB 1414.
A few weeks ago, in a vote of 33-2 on the Senate floor, AB 379 passed and we clinched the victory! On Wednesday, Governor Newsom signed the bill into law.
This major win is the result of the collective efforts of bold survivors and anti-trafficking advocates.
The key to ending sex trafficking—and especially child trafficking—is in holding buyers and would-be buyers accountable with strong criminal penalties.
This bill will:
* Make it a felony to purchase or solicit any minor for sex.
* Make it a crime to loiter with the intent to purchase sex, punishable with a $1000 fine.
* Establish a fund to support victims of sex trafficking.
This legislative win is a game-changer for fighting sex trafficking in California and Exodus Cry is honored to have played a key role in advocating for it.
Because of faithful supporters like you, we were able to do so much to help advance this bill. Here are just a few highlights:
* Joined the California Survivor Coalition to publicly support the bill and mobilize advocacy
* Activated our followers on social media to urge legislators to support it
* Organized survivor support letters and co-wrote an oped published in USA Today ([link removed])
* Attended multiple committee hearings and publicly spoke in support
* Spoke directly to members of the opposition to help them see the value of the bill
* Created a video ([link removed]) compiling survivor voices endorsing the bill
We stood on stage with Assemblymember Maggy Krell in support when the bill was first introduced, and I received a public “thank you” by Senator Shannon Grove on the Senate floor, on day the bill passed.
Senator Grove was the author of SB 1414, the original bill introduced last year to make it a felony to buy a child for sex.
We are deeply grateful for Senator Grove's courage and the bold advocacy of Assemblymember Maggy Krell. We commend their perseverance, tenacity and for standing with survivors at every step, despite opposition to this bill.
It’s hard to put into words how significant this victory is for vulnerable children in California.
It’s nothing short of historic, and our hearts are full of gratitude toward you and every person who raised their voice in support.
Truly, this is a cause for celebration.
With deep gratitude,
P.S. In a case of poetic timing, this bill was signed into law on July 30, World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. This was the very day we released our film Buying Her, and launched the End Demand campaign—both created to hold sex buyers accountable.
