Dozens of Texas House Democrats have fled the state – traveling to Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts – to deny Republicans the quorum needed to pass a mid-decade redistricting plan backed by Donald Trump.

In response, Governor Greg Abbott and GOP leaders are threatening to remove those lawmakers from office, fine them $500 per day, and even arrest them if they return to Texas.

Here’s what’s at stake: a new congressional map designed to add five more Republican seats in 2026. That means silencing minority communities, cementing partisan control, and undermining the democratic process.

Democratic Secretaries of State across the country are watching. They are on the front lines – protecting ballot integrity and ensuring that no party can override the voice of voters. But these threats aren’t just happening in Texas. The same authoritarian playbook is being used nationwide.
