PRIDE PRIMARIES: VICTORY!
Check two huge events off your historic firsts bingo card: Ritchie Torres and Mondaire Jones won their primaries and with little opposition in November, will become the first two Black openly LGBTQ people elected to the U.S. Congress [[link removed]] !
Remember this headline from The Advocate about Ritchie’s race to beat Rubén Díaz Sr. in New York’s 15th Congressional District [[link removed]] ? Great news – it all worked out! [[link removed]] Ritchie called representing his hometown "the honor of his life." [[link removed]]
In New York’s 17th Congressional District, Mondaire took an early lead, and his numbers kept tracking upwards as the night wore on. Around midnight, Mondaire declared victory and made LGBTQ history [[link removed]] .
Spotlight candidate Kristen Browde is still waiting to know if she'll make LGBTQ history and win her race for the New York state Assembly. She would become the first out trans person elected to public office in all of New York state! Here's how her race currently stands. [[link removed]] It's going to be a close one!
While he was waiting for all the mail-in ballots to be counted, Jabari Brisport’s , who would become the first out LGBTQ person of color elected to the New York state legislature, he took a moment to thank supporters and volunteers for all their amazing work [[link removed]] .
