John — Congress is in recess, which means I’m back home meeting with Vermonters, holding events, checking in with local organizations and businesses, and also taking some deep breaths.

The August recess means I don’t have to fly down to D.C. each week. It means I won’t be away from my family or my dog.

And for me, the August recess also means I will be stacking three cords of wood.

Wood

We heat our house with a woodstove in the fall, winter, and early spring, and the green logs need to be stacked so that they dry out before the snow comes.

Stacking wood is meticulous, straightforward, and purposeful. I feel a sense of satisfaction as I see the stacks held back from collapse. I’m in control. And it feels good to hold on to that feeling when so much feels out of control in our country right now.

The reality is that being in the minority party in Congress means that we have very little tangible power. Until we flip the House, that’s just the cold, hard truth.

The good news? The American people overwhelmingly oppose cuts to SNAP. They don’t want giveaways to billionaires. They want a government that works for them.

Our job now is to show people exactly what their representatives are doing in Washington and offer a better path forward. That’s what I’m in this fight to do. I’ll keep showing up, speaking out, and standing up for working families.

But I can’t do it alone. Will you chip in today to help us flip the House and elect Democrats who will stand up for working people, not billionaires?
