Dear John,
Right now, we are living through a turning point in history. Within the last couple of months, our world's norms have changed, and for Black communities grappling with the devastating effects of COVID-19 and systemic police violence, it is becoming undoubtedly clear that structural racism is at the root of both pandemics.
For as long as I can remember, this country has witnessed the murder of unarmed Black individuals by law enforcement using excessive force. Last week in the Jurist ([link removed]), my colleagues noted that "police detain, search, arrest and use force, especially lethal force, disproportionately against Blacks." Finally, we are collectively waking up and realizing that this continued violence is deeply rooted within the foundation of our society. It is an epidemic, and it must be treated as such.
At the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV), we know that police violence IS a form of gun violence. In fact, we believe -- in many ways -- that it is a root cause of gun violence. We also recognize that the lasting effects of COVID-19, ongoing social unrest, and a lack of trust in law enforcement are going to exacerbate the social and health inequities that are already deeply embedded in this country.
While we continue to fight and advocate for laws that will address these inequities, we know that one necessary change we can make right now is to end stand-your-ground laws!
As my colleague wrote in the Columbus Dispatch last week ([link removed]): "Stand-your-ground laws allow individuals to use deadly force even when there is an option to safely retreat from a potentially dangerous situation." In essence, these laws allow citizens to use racial biases as an excuse for murder.
At CSGV, we have fought against this harmful legislation since its creation. Now, we are asking for your help. Donate today to help make a difference and support CSGV as we fight against stand-your-ground: [link removed]!
Thank you,
