CBS 2 3 drivers wanted in fatal West Adams hit-and-run Police are looking for three drivers involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed one pedestrian Sunday night in the West Adams neighborhood, officials said Monday. Around 9 p.m., a driver heading northbound on La Brea Avenue struck a 61-year-old man who was walking in an unmarked crosswalk eastbound from Roseland Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. After he was struck down on the street, the victim was hit by at least two other vehicles that were also traveling northbound on La Brea Avenue, police said. None of the drivers from the three vehicles stopped to identify themselves or render help after striking the man. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced the victim dead while he was being taken to a nearby hospital. The man’s identity will not be released until additional family is notified, police said. “Motorists are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves,” the LAPD said in a statement. Anyone with information is asked to contact the South Traffic Division at 323-421-2500. A reward of up to $50,000 is available, according to the LAPD. NBC 4 ‘Test my corpse’: Man detained after standoff with police in Atwater Village A man is in Los Angeles Police Department custody after an hourslong standoff in the parking lot of an Atwater Village Costco. Police say officers were initially called to the 800 block of Academy Road in Elysian Park at about 10:30 a.m., and the driver, who is alleged to have made criminal threats, prompted a pursuit involving a Ford F-450 at about 10:45 a.m. That vehicle appears to be a passenger bus, and the driver was being pursued by police when he pulled into the parking lot in the 2900 block of Los Feliz Boulevard. Once in the parking lot, the man engaged in a standoff with police. His vehicle has “Toxicology test my corpse and this vehicle” scrawled in spray paint on the hood. For a lengthy period, the man refused to leave the bus, only venturing out to the steps of the passenger portion of his vehicle. After a while, however, police negotiators were able to coax him out of the bus, said Detective Meghan Aguilar. A passerby flagged down Los Angeles Airport Police to report a pair of men stripping and cutting copper wire from city-run streetlights, LAXPD said. Officers made their way to Vista Del Mar, where they said they spotted the men in action. A severe amount of damage was done to the lightning systems, according to LA Airport Police. Both individuals, whose names have not been released, were taken into custody. As the investigation continued, background checks showed that both men had convictions for property damage, theft and offenses involving inappropriate contact with a minor. It’s unclear what charges the men may face in connection with Sunday’s case. NBC 4 L.A. residents indicted in PA for allegedly distributing ‘most potent opioids known’ Two Angelenos are among 10 people indicted in Pittsburgh on charges they possessed and intended to distribute a litany of drugs. Darren Cooper, 38, and Paityn Phears, 24, were indicted Monday on four counts by a federal grand jury, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release. The pair was charged alongside eight others, two of whom are from Michigan, with the remaining six hailing from Pennsylvania. Prosecutors allege Cooper, Phears and their codefendants “allegedly conspired to possess with intent to distribute and distributed” the following between November 2023 and March of this year: 50 grams or more of methamphetamine; 500 grams or more of a mixture and substance containing methamphetamine; 100 grams or more of para-fluorofentanyl; 100 grams or more of heroin; 10 grams or more of carfentanil; 40 grams or more of fentanyl; and an undisclosed quantity of cocaine. Para-fluorofentanyl is similar to but even stronger than fentanyl, and as the state of Michigan details, it “is not detected during routine toxicology testing and requires specialized forensic toxicology testing.” KTLA 5 Suspect remains at large after walking into Montana bar, killing 4 The former U.S. soldier suspected of killing four people at a Montana bar was still at large early Sunday and may be armed after escaping in a stolen vehicle containing clothes and camping gear, officials said. Authorities believe 45-year-old Michael Paul Brown killed four people on Friday morning at The Owl Bar in Anaconda, Montana, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Missoula in a valley hemmed in by mountains. Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen said at a news conference Sunday that Brown committed the shooting with a rifle that law enforcement believes was his personal weapon. The victims ranged in age from 59 to 74 and were a female bartender and three male patrons. Knudsen warned residents in the town of just over 9,000 people that Brown, who lived next door to the bar where he was a regular, could come back to the area. “This is an unstable individual who walked in and murdered four people in cold blood for no reason whatsoever. So there absolutely is concern for the public,” Knudsen said. Associated Press BWC: Maryland officers use TASER to disarm man holding his child at knifepoint Montgomery County Police officers used less lethal methods to save a boy being held at knifepoint by his father, according to a news release. On July 26, officers responded to a home following reports of a domestic disturbance. The caller reported that a man was inside the residence, threatening his child. Officers with the department’s 5th District attempted to de-escalate the situation and communicate with the man upon arrival. Police say that when officers entered the home, the man went into the kitchen and held the child at knifepoint. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, the man refused. A sergeant then deployed a TASER, which caused the man to release the knife. Officers safely removed the child and took the suspect into custody without injury to the child or any officers. The suspect is charged with first- and second-degree assault, second-degree child abuse, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest. He is being held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division investigators will be handling the case. CBS 2 California is on pace for its worst wildfire year in recent memory, and SoCal is mostly to blame More than halfway through the year, California is currently on pace to have more fires and burn significantly more acreage than it did last year, with a weekend blaze in the rugged Central California mountains posing the latest challenge for firefighters. As of mid-July, California has seen more than 220,000 acres burn this year, almost 100,000 acres more than the state had seen on average at this point in the year over the last five years, according to statistics from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection that include data from both state and federal lands. That total doesn’t yet include the 65,000 acres burned in the Gifford fire, which ignited Friday in a rural, mountainous stretch across the Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo county line and continues to grow. It also doesn’t include the acreage from three fires that started in Southern California on Monday, including the 348-acre Gold fire in San Bernardino County. This year’s surge in fire activity appears to be driven by several large fires across Central and Southern California, including three that devastated parts of Los Angeles County in January. But even without those unprecedented January fires — the Palisades, Eaton and Hughes — this year would still outpace the five-year average for this point in the season.
