Texas legislators fled their state on Sunday in an effort to stop Trump’s extreme effort to rip power away from their voters and further tip the scales of our government toward Republicans. And Illinois is welcoming many of these brave lawmakers as they take this important stand.

Otherwise, let me break down why your support, especially right now, is so important.

1. At Trump’s request, Texas Republicans called a special session to redraw congressional districts years before the normal process laid out. The newly-drawn districts would make it harder for Democrats in Texas to have their votes matter and give the GOP up to five additional seats.


2. They are trying to silence the voice of the people and choose their own voters. Rather than actually listening to their communities and winning over voters, Trump and the GOP are just trying to cheat their way to keeping their majority.


3. That’s why Texas Democrats left the state. They’re trying to prevent Trump and Texas Republicans from passing these undemocratic maps. And many of them have come to Illinois.

I am proud to work with Gov. Pritzker and Illinoisans today as we shelter Texas Legislators in this critical moment for our democracy.

But Trump and Texas Gov. Abbott are hellbent on forcing these legislators to return so they can pass their power-grabbing maps. Gov. Abbott has even threatened to arrest and extradite these lawmakers from Illinois–or even illegally remove them from office–just because they are trying to advocate for their constituents.

John, I will never stop working to defend our democracy from wannabe dictator Donald Trump’s attacks on our freedoms. But it’s going to take all of us working together to stop this.
