As you know, school boards have been a target of MAGA groups, who aim to “MAGA-fy” them and push ultra-conservative agendas.
But now, MAGA is pivoting to fully infiltrate our cities— by targeting local city councils.
City councils have long been one of the few places where nonpartisanship still had a fighting chance. A place where leaders focused on things like fixing roads, improving city services, and supporting local events— not waging culture wars.
Unfortunately, that era is ending.
During the 2024 cycle, many Republican candidates brought Trump’s mantra of division and “draining the swamp” to their local campaigns.
Take Scottsdale, Arizona. Republican candidates Adam Kwasman and Jan Dubauskas ran on a message of “draining the swamp ”—and it worked. Every incumbent up for re-election lost.
Now look at Mesa, Arizona, where Republican Councilmember Julie Spilsbury—who supported Kamala Harris in 2024—is facing a recall. Supporting a presidential candidate shouldn't have anything to do with fixing potholes, but here we are.
Instead of discussing city budgets, road repairs, or family-friendly events, these city councils are now debating DEI programs, denouncing communism, and deciding who is loyal enough to “King” Donald Trump.
That’s why local parties like ours matter. As the Maricopa County Democratic Party, we’re committed to keeping culture war politics out of local government and defeating MAGA extremism wherever it rears its ugly head.
But these MAGA candidates are well-funded. And to beat them, we need your help.
Friend, can you chip in today to help us defend city councils in places like Scottsdale? Even $10, $25, or $50 can make a real difference in keeping extremists out of our local governments, and restore focus to the issues that matter. [[link removed]]
