The Voting Rights Act Is Under Attack
From the courts to Congress, the right to vote is being dismantled in plain sight.

Tomorrow marks the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. It was a landmark law – the result of decades of organizing, sacrifice, and protest. But six decades later, the protections it once offered are being stripped away.
The gutting began in 2013, when the Supreme Court’s Shelby County v. Holder decision effectively ended preclearance – the requirement that states and local governments with a history of discrimination get federal approval before changing voting laws.
Almost immediately, states began passing restrictive laws to impose strict new ID requirements, close polling places, and remove voters from the voter registration rolls with purges.
The attack didn’t stop there. In Brnovich v. DNC (2021), the Supreme Court made it harder to challenge discriminatory laws under what remains of the Voting Rights Act.
This year, lawsuits are ramping up once again – this time targeting the few protections that still stand.
And it’s not just the courts.
In Congress, Trump allies are advancing the SAVE Act, which would force every American to show specific government documents in person to prove their citizenship in order to register to vote. The bill is based on false claims. Non-citizen voting is a myth – it’s already illegal and virtually nonexistent. The SAVE Act could disenfranchise tens of millions who don’t have access to the right documents.
In Georgia, we’re seeing the consequences of a weakened Voting Rights Act in real time. The state’s latest voter purge is targeting nearly half a million voters – and our analysis shows Black voters are overrepresented once voters who likely moved out of state are removed from that list.
This is what modern voter suppression looks like: fewer protections, more red tape, and false claims to serve as the supposed reason for it all.
