August 5, 2025

Greetings, readers!

I’m pleased to bring you another sampling of NPQ’s latest articles—insights from experts in the field on the topic of new, emerging technologies and how to incorporate them for greatest impact.

This issue has:
* Expert Insights ([link removed]) —When it comes to new technologies, nonprofits need to embrace structured change management. Afua Bruce, engineer and data ethics leader, explains why in the first installment of her column. The Impact Algorithm.

* A Call to Action ([link removed]) —Philanthropy has long played an important role in providing initial funding for critical research, advocacy, and infrastructure to serve the greater public good. So, why should philanthropy and the nonprofit sector not be involved in developing ethical AI practices?

* An Analysis ([link removed]) —First-generation and low-income students face specific barriers to their success. While lack of financial resources plays a role, it is only part of the whole picture.

* A Solution ([link removed]) —Limited capacity is preventing organizations from accomplishing all of their goals and leading to higher rates of burnout. Many nonprofits are left wondering why philanthropy isn’t doing more to help frontline organizations minimize burnout, among other things.

As always, the Leadership desk loves to hear from you. Email [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .

And remember, nonprofits are more than a sector; we are the backbone of American civil society.
