Hi friend — I’m Efrén C. Olivares, and I’m honored to introduce myself as the new Vice President of Litigation and Legal Strategy at the National Immigration Law Center.

For nearly two decades, I’ve worked as an advocate and litigator focused on immigrants’ and workers’ rights, including representing hundreds of immigrant parents separated from their children at the border under Trump’s Zero Tolerance policy.

And as an immigrant myself, this work is deeply personal to me. I know firsthand what’s at stake when our communities are under attack.

I have joined NILC at a time when the stakes couldn’t be higher — we are witnessing unprecedented assaults on immigrants’ rights and threats to our democracy. The Trump administration is terrorizing families on our streets every day, pushing the limits of executive power, and weaponizing the law to target, detain, and deport our neighbors without due process.

Legal action is one of the most powerful tools we have to protect our communities and defend our democracy. That’s why the legal team at NILC is prepared to fight on all fronts:

Earlier this month, we challenged Idaho’s HB 135 — a law that would force people to prove citizenship to access life-saving healthcare, including HIV medication and treatment, even though federal law sets no such requirements. We successfully blocked the law from going into effect, ensuring that access to HIV treatment remains available for all immigrants throughout the state, while the court considers our full arguments.

Last month, we intervened in a federal lawsuit to defend the constitutionality of the Texas Dream Act — a landmark law that allows students, regardless of immigration status, to access in-state tuition and financial aid.

And we’re prepared for what’s next: ready to challenge any unlawful executive actions that try to bypass Congress and the Constitution to harm immigrant families.

The road ahead will be difficult, but we're giving this fight everything we’ve got. Your support makes this work possible, and together, we will stand strong and keep fighting for justice.

In solidarity,

Efrén C. Olivares
