The Trump administration has moved to destroy $9.7 million worth of taxpayer-funded birth control rather than send it abroad to women in need, including those in war zones and refugee camps.

You read that right.

According to The Guardian, destroying these mostly long-lasting contraceptives, intended for women in Africa, will cost U.S. taxpayers $167,000. The destruction of the contraceptives is part of Trump’s desire to dismantle the Agency for International Development (USAID), “the largest funding agency for humanitarian and development aid in the world.”

We have one question: Why??

As Sarah Shaw, the associate director of advocacy at MSI Reproductive Choices, a global family planning organization, stated, “It’s not just about an empty shelf. It’s about unfulfilled potential. It’s about a girl having to drop out of school. It’s about someone having to seek an unsafe abortion and risking their lives. That’s what it’s really about.”

This is a clear example of how critical it is that we elect pro-abortion rights candidates up and down the ballot. Republicans are not going to stop at stripping away abortion rights. They are coming after reproductive care in all its forms. We saw that when Virginia Republicans blocked a bill to protect birth control during the previous session, we saw that when a woman was denied prenatal care in Tennessee because she was “unwed,” and we are seeing it again now.
