John,
Detained immigrants inside Florida’s secretive “Alligator Alcatraz” facility have been on a hunger strike for more than ten days.
Pedro Hernández, a longtime Florida resident detained during a routine ICE check-in, was hospitalized this week, but he’s still refusing food. He says, “I’m not going to eat another plate of food until they show us respect.”
Alligator Alcatraz was built in secret on sacred Tribal land and is surrounded by the Everglades. It’s run by a private prison company, CoreCivic, that’s donated over $800,000 to Trump. Now, it’s holding people in tents, without proper sanitation, medical care, or even air conditioning. This week, it was exposed that there aren’t adequate hurricane protections or evacuation plans for the facility’s detainees, putting them at great risk in the middle of hurricane season.
Congress must act now to shut down Alligator Alcatraz and investigate the private contractors behind it.
The few experts that have been allowed to visit the facility have reported that it’s structurally unsafe, its generators can’t withstand Florida storms, and its buildings are prone to dangerous flooding.
What’s more, CoreCivic, the for-profit prison contractor running Alligator Alcatraz, has a long track record of abuse. We’ve got to act now to safeguard the detainees being held in unsafe and unjust conditions.
We can’t look away. Please join us in taking action today.
Thank you,
Democratic Values
