This weekend, more than 50 Texas legislators — including 13 EMILYs List women — did something extraordinary: they left the state, risking arrest under Attorney General Ken Paxton's penalties, to break quorum and delay the passage of a devastating and blatantly undemocratic GOP gerrymandering bill.

The GOP's gerrymandering assaults every community in the state. It would make 30 of Texas' 38 congressional districts safe Republican seats, netting Republicans five more seats in the U.S. House, despite more than 42% of Texans voting for Kamala Harris last year.

This bill is disenfranchisement, plain and simple. Trump is pushing Republican Gov. Greg Abbott to pass it because he knows how unpopular their party's governance is — and he knows the only way Republicans will hold the U.S. House in 2026 is by rigging maps, suppressing votes, and stealing seats.

Now, these courageous Texas women are putting it all on the line for our democracy. We're immensely proud to have helped elect them, and we're so grateful for their bravery in the face of threats and coercion from their state's Republican leaders. They are proof that we're not powerless: even in red states, Democrats can do their part to stop the Trump takeover.

These women are why we do the work we do.
