Friends — You may be following what’s happening in Texas. You may be hearing about it for the first time now.

Either way, I want to break down how we got here.

First: Trump worked with Republicans leaders in Texas to propose new Congressional maps as part of a highly unusual mid-decade redistricting — a naked attempt to gerrymander more Republican seats and rig themselves a voter-proof majority ahead of next year’s midterms.

Then: Democratic legislators in Texas took this threat seriously, and made the decision to leave the state indefinitely in an inspiring act of collective solidarity that is currently blocking Republican legislators from reaching a quorum in the statehouse and approving these rigged maps.

Now: The Republican Speaker of the House in Texas has signed civil arrest warrants for the absent Democratic members, and is working with the governor to have state authorities arrest them and remove them from office.

This is a boldly authoritarian move from Texas Republicans, co-signed by Donald Trump.

If they succeed in forcing these legislators to come home and vote on this unprecedented redistricting, they will use it as a blueprint to pass more rigged maps in states around the country every time they face a tough election cycle.

And if you’re really wondering how we got here, the answer is that over the last decade of Donald Trump’s domination of the GOP, he has led them down a path of corruption and lawlessness, shamelessly rigging the system in their favor at every turn.
