You may have seen the news: [ [link removed] ]Texas Republicans are pushing a mid‑decade
redistricting plan that would give them even more safe congressional seats
– at the expense of voters in diverse, growing communities across the
state.

This is unfair, undemocratic, and it breaks (for obvious partisan reasons)
with the long‑standing practice of redistricting once per decade, after
the Census is complete.

While we’re seeing an egregious attack on our democratic systems play out
in Texas, there’s also a remarkable show of political courage unfolding
before our eyes: More than 50 Democratic state legislators have left Texas
to break quorum and hit the brakes on this power grab.

They know that they could face fines, threats, and political consequences,
but they chose to accept those risks and take this stand for democracy.
It’s an important and encouraging example of what it means to stand up and
insist that our political systems do better.

Earlier today, I was joined by one of these legislators, State Rep. Gina
Hinojosa, on Instagram Live to discuss what’s at stake for all Americans,
what comes next for these lawmakers, and how people across the country can
support their efforts.

First: You can speak out and make sure your own networks understand how
what’s happening in Texas will impact the entire country. [ [link removed] ]That could
include sharing my conversation with Rep. Hinojosa on your own social

Second: These legislators could face fines of $500 for every day that they
are standing up for our democracy. [ [link removed] ]If you are inclined to help with
their needs and show your support, please consider making a contribution
