Right now, Texas legislators are risking everything to protect our democracy — and here in Illinois, we are standing with them.
Last night, two dozen brave Democratic lawmakers from Texas left their state to stop Donald Trump’s ally, Governor Greg Abbott, from ramming through an extreme redistricting plan designed to silence voters — especially Black, Latino, and working-class communities.
Abbott’s plan is simple: Rig the maps to remove 5 Democratic seats, cement Republican control in the U.S. House for years to come, and silence millions of voters.
If he succeeds, Trump will use this as a blueprint for racist, anti-democratic gerrymandering across the country.
These Texas legislators are fighting back — even as Abbott threatens to remove them from office and charge them with felonies. And Illinois is proud to stand with them in this fight.
Illinois has always been a safe haven for those defending what’s right. So when these two dozen Texas legislators landed in Chicago yesterday, we welcomed them with open arms — and with deep gratitude.
They aren’t just fighting for Texans. They’re fighting for every single American who believes our voices should matter equally — no matter our zip code, race, or income.
We opened our doors because we know what they are doing matters for all of us. They’re defending voting rights for voters of color, for working families, for anyone who’s ever been told their voice doesn’t count.
Now it’s our turn to show up for them.
When we show up for one another — across states, across communities — we can stop their attacks and protect our fundamental rights.
Let’s send a clear message: We will NOT let Trump, Abbott, or anyone else silence the voices of the people.
