2 dead, 6 wounded in mass shooting in downtown L.A. after music festival.

Two people are dead and six others were wounded at an after-party for the Hard Summer music festival in downtown Los Angeles early Monday, according to police and media reports. About 11 p.m. Sunday, a “big party” was shut down at a warehouse in the 1100 block of 14th Place after officers saw a person possibly armed with a gun go inside, said Los Angeles Police Officer Norma Eisenman. That person was arrested at the scene, she said. The party had been promoted on social media as an unofficial after-party for the Hard Summer music festival, a house- and techno-music festival, taking place over the weekend at Hollywood Park, next to SoFi Stadium. A post for the after-party on Instagram listed several DJs who were expected to spin techno and house music at the event. But at about 1 a.m. Monday, officers were dispatched back to the area after reports of gunfire and found eight people shot, Eisenman said. One man was declared dead at the scene and seven others were taken to the hospital, where a woman died of her injuries. No suspects have been identified, and an investigation is ongoing.

Rapper Soulja Boy arrested on weapons charge during traffic stop in Fairfax District, LAPD says

The rapper Soulja Boy was arrested early Sunday in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, authorities said. Few details were immediately available about the arrest, which an LAPD spokesperson said occurred about 2:30 a.m. during a traffic stop near the intersection of Genesee and Melrose avenues. Soulja Boy, 35, whose real name is Deandre Cortez Way, was booked into jail in the Los Angeles Police Department's Wilshire Division on suspicion of a felony, the agency said. In April 2023, a jury ordered the "Crank That" singer to pay $235,900 in punitive damages to a woman who alleged that the rapper yelled profanities, kicked her, stomped on her stomach and bashed her head with a large gun during a party she attended at his Malibu home in 2019. The amount was the same that the panel had given the woman a week earlier in compensatory damages.

Southern California man embezzled over $2.2 million from elderly victim

A Southern California man was convicted of embezzling over $2.2 million in money and property from an elderly victim. Jamal Nathan Dawood, 54, a.k.a. “Jimmy Dawood,” of Burbank, was found guilty of wire fraud and money laundering on July 31, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The elderly victim had inherited real estate properties and retirement savings from a brother who had passed away. In 2019, Dawood offered to help the victim manage his inheritance, convincing him to open a trust account to manage the funds, prosecutors said. Without the victim’s knowledge, Dawood began transferring money from the new account to people he had personal or business relationships with. He later convinced the victim to transfer ownership of his home and his late brother’s real estate holdings to third-party companies that were actually controlled by Dawood or people he knew. “Dawood falsely represented that the victim would retain an ownership interest in his residence and the inherited real estate through these companies,” court documents said.
