When other countries have experienced mass tragedy, their lawmakers have taken action. In the United States, we act differently.
Eight days after the worst shooting in Austria’s history, lawmakers took action to enhance the country’s gun laws.
Less than a week after the worst shooting in New Zealand’s history, the prime minister announced an assault weapons ban and parliament passed it with near-unanimous support.
It’s now been eight days since the worst shooting in New York City in decades and not only have lawmakers gone home for August recess without any vote on gun violence prevention, two more mass shootings have left 6 people dead on the other side of the country.
In other countries, a mass shooting means lifesaving action, it means changing the laws to stop the next tragedy. In the United States, a mass shooting is just the first possible one of the week.
In the United States, there have already been over 250 mass shootings this year alone.
Americans are forced to live in fear while other countries are protected from gun violence by governments that care about them. Lawmakers acting in the interest of their constituents shouldn’t be a rarity, but thanks to the gun lobby bribing politicians with blood money, our lives come second to gun industry profits.
