Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Thursday, we held our second East Side Community Listening Session. While this wraps up the listening sessions for the East Side, it’s only the beginning. We’re just getting started creating meaningful spaces where the community can play a direct role in supporting our students. We talked to over 58 community members on the east side in the two sessions. Region 1 School Board Member Melissa Hughes led an incredible start to our community listening sessions at Rochambeau Library.

Below is pictures from the community listening session at Hope High!

These community listening sessions are the start to the transformation of the Providence School Board; the new structure has allowed us a fresh start. You now have a school board that’s focused on what students will know or learn when they leave school. We still have lots of work to do to create one of the best school districts in the country, but this is the first step. The board has been focused on student outcomes and now we’re building goals that reflect the community's vision and values.

Over the next few months, the board has over 17 community listening sessions and outreach events planned all across the city. At each of these events we’ll be talking to the community in the same format, about what students should know or learn when they leave school. Let me be clear, a third-party education governance team said we’ve set up these sessions in a manner that is the gold standard and if executed correctly will be a national model of how to conduct community listening sessions around student outcomes. I am excited to share that we are three for three in conducting community listening sessions that have been executed in a manner that could serve as a national model.

We invite you to join us in our journey to transform the schools to serve student outcomes with the vision and values of the community. This survey is the same questions that are in the community listening sessions. If you didn’t make it to one of the first two listening sessions, catch us at one of the others.

Join us this Thursday for my first Fundraiser since serving as the elected School Board Member for Region 1 we’ll be at The Point Tavern at 302 Wickenden St. Providence, RI 02903. You can RSVP here: https://www.facebook.com/share/15w58a8q9g/. My goal is to raise $2,500 and I’ve already raised about $1,800. I’ll be using these funds to pay for my internship program to help with communication and policy research. I also use these funds to pay for recurring costs like zoom, web hosting, email blast, and text blast.

It’s been an honor to serve this region in the city I love, in the very school district where I’ll raise my children. We are facing tough times with the attempts to revoke federal dollars from our district. But our community has remained resilient and more engaged than ever before. I look forward to announcing monthly community meetings and an elaborate year plan as the Chair of Career and Technical Education.

Sincerely,
Corey Jones
School Board Member, Region 1
