Hi John — Raja here!

Something you may not know is that my first major role in Illinois politics was working on Barack Obama’s campaign for U.S. Senate.

Back then, it was a far cry from where he’d eventually end up. He was as different from the mainstream as they come — he came from an immigrant background and had a “funny name.”

We had a common background. But I’d never thought that someone like me could run for office – let alone win. 

We all know how that ended up. 

Nowadays, I know it can seem like we’re a long way away from the era of “hope and change.” Donald Trump has been ruthlessly attacking President Obama as a “traitor” and trying to undo all of his legacy of fighting for working people. 

But John – today is President Obama’s birthday! And I can say personally how much his pathbreaking legacy means to so many of us.  

As President, he fought for the working class, stood up to bullies, and ensured our children got the best possible future. He showed what was possible for all of us who have been counted out, underestimated, or had a background that’s a little different.

So today, I want to make sure President Obama knows that grassroots Democrats stand with him and are celebrating his legacy. That’s why we’re launching a grassroots Birthday Card to show that all of us are with him at this moment
