** Broad + Liberty Launches New Regional Bureau for Lancaster County

Dear Readers,
Lancaster County is the place where the Delaware Valley’s brisk atmosphere has finally tapered off and the serenity of rural Pennsylvania begins. Vast farmlands drape across the landscape, religious adherence is strong, and life is often calm.
But that oversimplifies it.
Lancaster County is the sixth most populous county in the Keystone State, with a population comparable to Delaware County’s and greater than Chester County’s. It is home to well-reputed colleges like Elizabethtown, Franklin & Marshall, and Millersville. Lancaster City was the United States capital for one day, September 27, 1777, when the Continental Congress had to flee Revolutionary War hostilities in Philadelphia. The city was home to the great abolitionist Congressman Thaddeus Stevens. Today, the city boasts a charming downtown with galleries, museums, historic sites, and performance venues.
A place like this needs a local media that recognizes how special it is.
All the more so because of the county’s unique politics. A majority of Lancaster County voters have backed the Republican presidential candidate all but once (1964) in the past century, though Democrats dominate in elections in and around Lancaster City. And just this year, a Democrat captured the 36th Senate district for the first time since it migrated to the county in the early 1980s.
And, of course, beyond the largely evangelical conservative communities and lively urban enclaves are Amish settlements whose residents lead quiet, pious lives according to Anabaptist tradition born in the late 17th Century. How many places with under 1,000 square miles can boast such a variety of American subcultures?
A region this exceptional deserves a smart, robust news outlet that captures and illuminates the area’s most fundamental concerns. That is why Broad + Liberty has founded the Lancaster County Independence ([link removed]) , a new web-based journalism platform whose mission is to incisively cover the subjects and events that matter to Lancaster County residents from the Susquehanna River to the Texter Mountain Preserve to Octoraro Creek. Our editorial team possesses the decades of experience and accomplishment that such a project demands.
We are thrilled to launch that project today with our first edition. We hope that our efforts will earn your trust as a premier forum for presenting important news and sharp commentary to Lancaster County.
With regards,
Terry Tracy — CEO | Broad + Liberty
