Email from MCRGO   MICHIGAN COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS "Promoting safe use and ownership of firearms through education, litigation, and legislation." MONDAY E'NEWS MCRGO Recognizes Responsible Gun Owners Already this summer, concealed pistol license holders have intervened to stop two attempted mass homicides with no loss of life apart from one of the attackers. MCRGO is recognizing the CPL holders in these incidents with the organization's "Michigan Responsible Gun Owner of the Year" commendation. These cases have received global attention, illustrating the importance of armed citizens in stopping violent crime. On Sunday, June 22, 2025, a 31-year-old suspect carrying an AR-15 rifle entered the campus of CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan. A church deacon rammed the suspect with his truck. The suspect was then shot and killed by two members of the church's security team who had completed a USCCA "Protecting Your House of Worship" training course prior to the incident. MCRGO is recognizing the security team collectively. Due to a request for privacy by members of the team, the recognition will be presented by MCRGO Director and State Representative Phil Green to the lead pastor of CrossPointe Community Church. On Saturday, July 26, a homeless individual with a long history of mental health and substance abuse problems entered the Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, and stabbed 11 people with a 3.5" folding knife. All of the victims survived the attack. The suspect was rammed and driven out of the store by a man with a shopping cart. Traverse City resident Derrick Perry, a CPL holder, then drew on the suspect, holding him at gunpoint until the suspect was tackled by a third man prior to being arrested by responding law enforcement. Derrick Perry is being recognized by MCRGO for his role in this case as a responsible gun owner. MCRGO is also providing him with a no-cost opportunity to take MCRGO's Everyday Concealed Carry (Advanced CPL) course. Perry is an MCRGO member. State Capitol Gun Ban Reversal Introduced Adding to last Monday's Midsummer Legislative Update, this past week House Bill 4756 was introduced by Rep. Gina Johnsen (R-Odessa Township). The bill would statutorily reverse a Michigan Capitol Commission decision to ban the public carry of firearms in the Michigan State Capitol Building. The bill only applies to concealed pistol license holders carrying a concealed pistol. It does not impact open carry of pistols or long guns. The legislation follows a June 2025 incident in which Michigan rocker Ted Nugent entered the Michigan State Capitol with a concealed pistol despite the ban. Michigan State Police say they’re investigating the lapse in security that occurred when Nugent was armed at the Capitol during his testimony before a joint committee meeting. While it is not believed that Nugent intended to violate the ban, he inadvertently demonstrated how ineffective it is despite firearms scanners manned by Michigan State Police at the entrance.
