Email from OCPAC Sheriff Tommie Johnson & Ryan Walters: Setting the Record Straight Published Monday, August 4, 2025 SEND THIS NEWSLETTER TO A FRIEND HERE. BOB LINN OKLAHOMA'S POLITICAL CHAOS The political theater on Oklahoma’s ever-more-prominent national stage has served thus far as an embarrassment to its people. These events reveal much about the character of our state and they cast a shadow on the history of the schools and the churches that have developed our people and our state leadership. For Oklahoma education in national news, see NBC News, Politico, CBS News, The 19th News, the Wall Street Journal, & CNN I spoke with Ryan Walters multiple times this week. I spoke also with both Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson and former legislator Jason Murphey, the creator of OMES (Office of Management & Enterprise Services). OMES is the office assigned by the Governor to investigate the quite vulgar and ostentatious accusations of State Department of Education board members Becky Carson and Ryan Detherage regarding the office television of Ryan Walters. Sheriff Tommie Johnson was upset by the statement Ryan Walters made at his press conference which stated that he had been cleared by the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department. On the phone last week, Sheriff Johnson, in his very nice way, made clear that he does not want any statements made public regarding the case until his department’s research is complete. The problem is that board members Becky Carson and Ryan Detherage launched a major media blitz. Their rash and ill-advised actions made a non-story into what can only be described as a hoax that Oklahoma's political left has feasted upon. Because of their irresponsible behavior, the name Ryan Walters has been subject to libelous statements and defamation state-wide. OMES has confirmed that none of his personal devices (cell phone, laptop, etc.) were ever connected to that television. On Monday, members of the Sheriff’s department were present when the OMES IT contractors were doing their investigation. Because the results of the evaluation of the television in Ryan’s office were so definitive and conclusive to all the agencies in the room, they all acknowledged, in front of Ryan, the obvious. Ryan had nothing to do with the images on the screen. For these reasons, Ryan, seeking to counter the nefarious and unprincipled public statements to the state-wide media by board members Becky Carson and Ryan Detherage, said this in his press conference: We have had our name cleared by both OMES and the Sheriff’s office. There is nothing scandalous that I was a part of whatsoever. When I spoke to Ryan this week, he regrets the way in which his statement upset Sheriff Tommie Johnson who wanted nothing said before everything could be said. Ryan said to me: I understand why Tommie is upset for this being broadcast to the state media prematurely . . . but then, so am I. Like Sheriff Tommie Johnson, Ryan Walters would have preferred that nothing go to the media until the accusations of Becky Carson and Ryan Detherage were investigated. Oklahoma would have been much better served if the accusations could have been handled discretely, professionally, and quietly put to rest for the nonsense they are. JASON MURPHEY CREATOR OF OMES The investigation to which Ryan referred in his news conference was best described by former Oklahoma Legislator, Jason Murphy, in an email to me this weekend: After allegations of inappropriate content were leaked to the media on Friday, state officials responded with unusual speed—an impressive feat for the state government. By Monday morning, the state’s Chief Information Officer had already approved the use of a cybersecurity contractor. That same afternoon, the contractor went on site and attempted to cast content to that television. They were unable to do so. Due to strict network restrictions, likely put in place by OMES Cybersecurity (and illustrative of the importance of the state's holistic IT policy), the contractors were unable to even detect the device—by mobile phone or computer—much less cast content to it. While there are other means to broadcast and control content from a remote device, such as disconnecting the television from the state network, creating a secondary network, such as that of a mobile hotspot, and reconnecting the television through that new network, in my view these findings make it extremely unlikely that content was sent to the television from an external source—especially from a lay person without IT familiarity. Any "fig leaf" suggestion that this could have occurred, thus preventing the complete vindication of Walters, simply lacks credibility. Instead, the evidence strongly supports the leading hypothesis: that two board members, one of whom was attending what was only her third meeting, seated at a significant distance from the television, mistook vintage 1980s wrestling footage, from Fox News, featuring Hulk Hogan for inappropriate content. That theory aligns closely with the detailed, first-hand descriptions of the footage as provided by board member Ryan Deatherage and the testimony of a board staffer who has confirmed that Fox News was playing on the television at the time. Last week, Wade Burleson spoke to the editor of the Oklahoman to offer a counter to the one-sided reporting that the newspaper has done. Thus far, they have not run the article. So, I am publishing his excellent article here: WILLIAM WADE BURLESON In Defense of Ryan Walters: A Man of Courage and Conviction In an era where moral relativism and cultural erosion threaten the very foundations of our nation, Ryan Walters, Superintendent of Oklahoma Public Education, stands as a beacon of courage and conviction. He embodies the principles upon which the United States was built—liberty, religious freedom, personal responsibility, and an unyielding commitment to truth. These are not abstract ideals for Ryan; they are lived realities that guide his every decision in public service. Ryan's courage is evident in his fearless opposition to the radical agendas infiltrating our schools. He has boldly confronted the indoctrination of young minds with divisive ideologies like critical race theory and gender confusion, insisting instead on education rooted in American exceptionalism and historical accuracy. Consider the baseless smears aimed at undermining his integrity. Recently, allegations surfaced about inappropriate content on a new television in his office during a board meeting. Let me set the record straight: this TV requires a specific code to access streaming services, and Ryan has never received that code—a fact easily proven by forensic analysis of the device and login records. The investigation itself, as reported, couldn't confirm any specific content due to limited logging, yet detractors leaped to conclusions to tarnish his reputation. This isn't journalism; it's a witch hunt designed to distract from Ryan's effective leadership. His office has maintained transparency, and the absence of evidence speaks volumes. Ryan's conviction shines here, too—he refuses to back down or apologize for falsehoods, standing firm like the patriots who faced British tyranny without flinching. Equally commendable is Ryan's authorship of the new Social Studies standards, a comprehensive guide that restores patriotism and historical truth to our classrooms Titled in the spirit of pro-American education, this document—available here —overhauls outdated curricula to emphasize America's heritage, including the Bible's role in shaping our laws and ethics. It's not just a textbook, but a foundational resource that counters the anti-American narratives peddled in some academic circles. Ryan promoted these standards with input from conservative scholars, ensuring they highlight virtues like hard work, individual liberty, and national unity. Critics decry it as "indoctrination," but that's projection; the real indoctrination is the secular humanism that has dominated education for decades. Ryan's work aligns perfectly with U.S. principles, teaching students to appreciate the sacrifices of our forebears and to become informed citizens who cherish freedom. The attacks on Ryan, whether through fabricated scandals or lawsuits against his standards, are not about policy disagreements; they're assaults on his principles. Ryan threatens the establishment by prioritizing parents over bureaucrats and truth over trends. His conviction mirrors the resolve of our Founders, who risked everything for a nation under God. As a pastor, I've seen too many leaders compromise under pressure, but Ryan Walters refuses. He deserves our support, not scorn, for having the courage to defend what made America great. Let us rally behind him, for in doing so, we uphold the very soul of our republic. POSTSCRIPT by BOB LINN The many conversations I have had with those close to the mis-information campaign aimed at disenfranchising Ryan Walters have revealed a sordid side to members of Oklahoma's political class I could not have imagined. I may find it necessary to continue to write on the subject as the summer (and my "time away") begins to wind down. One thing has always been true and will always be true: Jesus is King of Kings Jesus is Lord of Lords Jesus is the King of glory. I take comfort knowing that the sin of men will not remain covered forever. As Paul promised Timothy: Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these [present day evil] men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men. ~II Timothy 3:8,9 The epistemological foundation of mankind is the Word of God and it is the only starting point enabling individuals, families, and nations to progress, prosper, and bear cultural fruit. May God restore the wealth of His Word and the revelation of His Spirit to our impoverished pulpits, may He restore our emaciated pews and may He, through His People (the Church), breath health, beauty, and integrity into the cultures of the world. May God so restore and bless Oklahoma! LOOKING FOR DR. EVERETT PIPER? He will be our feature most weeks. The assault on Ryan Walters by the government and the media has re-directed us.
