Dear Friends,

Today NRCAT commemorates the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, remembering that on this day in 1987, the Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment came into effect and the nations of the world took notice.

On this important day, we honor the leadership and resilience of survivors of torture, including those who are leading campaigns nationwide to end the torture of solitary confinement. We mark this day amidst the unfolding crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and the systemic anti-Black violence in the U.S. that has sparked global protest for racial justice.

As an organization founded in 2006 to "end torture in U.S. policy, practice, and culture," our work has never felt more urgent. I invite you to donate to NRCAT today, to support NRCAT’s work for racial justice, elevating the voices of survivors of torture in order to abolish it once and for all.

This month, NRCAT launched a "Never Again" campaign to confront the federal Bureau of Prisons "total lockdown" in response to protests for racial justice and its severe negligence in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you have not already done so, I invite you to contact your Senators today using the message NRCAT has prepared, to tell Attorney General Barr that total lockdown of people in federal prisons should never again be a response to peaceful protests.

Together, we can build a torture-free world.

Thank you for all you do,

Rev. Ron Stief
Executive Director

Power of the People: A Fireside Chat with Desmond Meade - Friday, June 26 at 12:30pm ET

Join Johnny Perez, the Director of NRCAT’s U.S. Prisons Program, for a discussion with Desmond Meade, Executive Director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition. Mr. Meade led the FRRC to a historic victory in 2018 with the successful passage of Amendment 4, a grassroots citizen’s initiative which restored voting rights to over 1.4 million Floridians with past felony convictions.

Mr. Meade and Mr. Perez will discuss the importance of grassroots organizing, building political power in Florida and across the United States, and what lessons organizers can learn from Florida's historical move to grant 1.4 million people their right to vote.  Register for the webinar.
