Hi John,
The governments of Europe's richest countries are still using our public money to bankroll the fossil fuel industry, even as global temperatures skyrocket and our climate rapidly changes.
Can you imagine what all those billions could do, if instead of propping up oil and gas companies, it was used to protect workers, communities, and the climate?
Next month, we have a chance to influence how our money is spent. Finance ministers from G20 countries [2] are meeting to discuss how we recover from the coronavirus pandemic. We have a plan to ask them to put people before polluters. They must invest in jobs, green cities, healthcare, and a just recovery, and address the economic and climate crisis together.
There is plenty that our finance ministers could talk about when it comes to climate action. G20 countries are wasting billions each year to help fossil fuel companies find new fossil fuel reserves, despite warnings from scientists that we need to leave fossil fuels in the ground.
The Covid-19 pandemic changed so much for each one of us, but the urgency with which we need to address the climate crisis is still here. The people in charge of the budgets of the world’s richest countries can - and must - make sure that the pandemic recovery plans help us transition to a more just, low-carbon, renewable economy.
Our plan is bold. We’ll go out on the streets in key capitals of the G20 countries across the globe - not for mass protests, but for small, targeted, socially-distanced actions which will grab the attention of the media and our politicians. We’ll add to this massive pressure online, with 350 supporters from across Europe and the world speaking up for a green and just recovery for people, not polluters. This, and more, will help make this moment about global solidarity and the universal demand for equity, security and wellbeing. This time around, we want the news headlines to be about our movement for climate justice.
Thank you,
Julia for the entire 350 Europe team
PS: We know that right now, many of us are experiencing the harsh economic impacts of the pandemic. That's why it's so important we raise our voices for a global recovery that supports people, and essential services like healthcare, housing and public transport, rather than bailing out corporations and paying for CEO bonuses. We know it also means you might not be in a position to donate right now - and that's OK. Stay tuned for many other ways you can help raise the pressure on the G20 governments in the coming weeks!
