ACTION SPOTLIGHT

Protect Public Lands and Waters From More
Attacks in Washington

Last month, President Trump signed into
law Congress’s deeply unpopular budget bill — authorizing the
government to auction off vast swaths of public lands and waters
for reckless drilling, mining, and logging to pay for tax cuts
for big polluters and billionaires.

But NRDC supporters didn’t let them
do it in silence — tens of thousands of you called and sent
messages of opposition to your members of Congress, telling them
loud and clear that you won’t stop fighting to protect the places
we hold dear.

Now is not the time to give up —
polluting companies and their cronies on Capitol Hill are betting
we’ll stay silent so they can continue to destroy our shared
lands and waters.

Add your name to stand up for our
public lands and waters. ( [link removed] )

CAMPAIGN UPDATE

EPA Plans to Weaken “Forever Chemicals”
Standards in Drinking Water, Despite Widespread Contamination

PFAS are widely-used, highly toxic
chemicals found in everyday items from cookware to cleaning
products — and new maps produced by NRDC show that unsafe levels
of PFAS pollute our tap water.

Seventy-nine percent of U.S.
congressional districts have PFAS-contaminated tap water that
exceeds EPA standards for safe drinking water. This is a serious
problem — PFAS are linked to cancer, hormone disruption,
developmental harm, and so much more. And they can be damaging
even at extremely low doses.

At the same time, EPA Administrator Lee
Zeldin announced that the EPA will weaken its standards on toxic
PFAS chemicals in drinking water — putting more communities at
even greater risk of suffering the devastating health impacts of
PFAS.

Tell the EPA to keep toxic “forever
chemicals” out of our drinking water. ( [link removed] )

LITIGATION UPDATE

NRDC Sues EPA to Protect Us from
Flesh-Dissolving Chemical

NRDC and partner groups filed a lawsuit
last month to force the EPA to address the threat of the
unnecessary and dangerous chemical hydrogen fluoride (HF), which
is used in dozens of American oil refineries despite its
potential to form toxic acid clouds. At least 40 refineries
across the country use HF despite the availability of safer,
commercial-scale alternatives. Read More > ( [link removed] )

IMPACT

* Flint Finishes Lead Pipe Replacement
in Historic Milestone: ( [link removed] ) NRDC’s decade-long legal fight to replace lead water pipes in
Flint, Michigan, is finished — nearly 11,000 lead pipes have been
replaced and more than 28,000 properties restored. Read More > ( [link removed] )
* Public Advocacy Groups Take Trump Administration to Court for
Illegal Coal Plant Extension: ( [link removed] ) NRDC and eight other public advocacy groups took the
administration to court for illegally requiring Michigan’s J.H.
Campbell coal plant to stay open past its planned May 31 closure.

* California Home Hardening Investments Protect Property and
Boost Economy: ( [link removed] ) A new report commissioned by NRDC finds that home hardening —
vital wildfire preparedness like replacing house vents with fine
mesh to block embers — will both save lives and boost the economy
as a whole. Read More > ( [link removed] )
* Legal Groups Caution Japan’s Largest Bank Over Controversial
LNG Project that Threatens World Heritage Site: ( [link removed] ) NRDC and ClientEarth USA warn Japan’s largest bank MUFG that
its support of a dirty liquefied natural gas project in Mexico’s
biodiverse Gulf of California could expose the bank to serious
legal, financial, and reputational risks. Read more > ( [link removed] )

DEEP DIVE

Who Pays When Insurance Fails to Cover
Climate Disasters?

I’ll give you a hint: It’s not just those
who faced disastrous floods in central Texas earlier this summer.
It’s not just the tens of thousands of people in L.A. who lost
their homes in the January wildfires. It’s not just residents in
New Orleans and surrounding areas who are still recovering from
Hurricane Katrina 20 years ago. And it’s not just homeowners.

ACTION ROUNDUP

* Stop the Trump Admin’s Latest Attack
on Our Climate and Health: ( [link removed] ) Submit a public comment demanding that the EPA uphold their
mandate to protect us from climate-busting pollution. Take action
by the Sept. 15 deadline > ( [link removed] )
* Protect Arctic Public Lands from the Administration’s Attacks:
( [link removed] ) The Trump administration proposed stripping protections for 13
million acres of the nation’s largest intact landscape, opening
it up to dirty drilling. Send a message of opposition by the Aug.
4 deadline > ( [link removed] )
* Defend Lifesaving Limits on Power Plant Pollution: ( [link removed] ) Tell the EPA you oppose their plans to repeal critical
standards for power plants and toxic air pollution that NRDC
supporters like you worked hard to secure last year. Take action
by the Aug. 7 deadline > ( [link removed] )

* Protect the Public from Flesh-Dissolving Chemicals: ( [link removed] ) While NRDC is fighting in court to regulate the use of toxic
hydrogen fluoride in oil refineries, we need you to tell the EPA
to get this deadly chemical out of our communities. Send a
message > ( [link removed] )

* Tell J.P. Morgan to Keep Dirty Energy Out of an Irreplaceable
Marine Sanctuary: ( [link removed] ) A dangerous new liquefied natural gas project would turn
Mexico’s irreplaceable Gulf of California into a gas station.
