Face Masks While Carrying
There is misinformation spreading rapidly among Michigan firearms owners suggesting it is illegal to carry openly or concealed while wearing a face mask. This is due to a meme that has gone viral this week on social media implying that face mask requirements are a covert attempt at gun control. We published the information below in the May 4, 2020 E'News. To combat the misinformation we are repeating it in this rare Friday edition of MCRGO's E'News.
Michigan Compiled Laws 750.396 says, "A person who intentionally conceals his or her identity by wearing a mask or other device covering his or her face for the purpose of facilitating the commission of a crime is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 93 days or a fine of not more than $500.00, or both."
Consequently, a person legally carrying a firearm while wearing a face mask who is not facilitating the commission of a crime is not subject to the legal penalties for wearing a face mask in Michigan. While the false information spreading online appears to be targeting mask requirements, it has the unfortunate effect of deterring people from carrying outside the home for self defense.
The images in the meme suggest it originated in California. Our allies in California have published information that the meme is not accurate there either. USA Carry published an article last week about this topic in the rest of the country including Illinois.
